Decades after the start of the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union clashed again. Politicians and academics raced to revise history for political reasons, and hundreds of thousands of young Americans died in the conflict. Dr Sultan Khan wrote the most comprehensive single-volume work to emerge from this period.
He also set out to explore how the United States should defend itself against future Cold War threats, and he proposed political reforms for the Middle East and Asia. Dr Khan’s book aims to overturn the simplistic narratives that have come to dominate the recent history of the world.
Public Administration provides a clear, coherent and relevant account of contemporary international politics. It covers the threats to the world that have arisen since the end of the Cold War, the difficult situations into which these threats have led and the responses which have been taken.
The book also explains the basic issues of the present period—who has power, how is power distributed, why are certain countries rising and others in decline and how can political change be effected.
Sultan M. Khan is Professor of Public Policy and Associate Dean at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. He is also Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for East Asian Policy Studies, National University of Singapore. A native of Pakistan, he is the author of many books including International Security in South Asia: The Shaping of Indian Foreign Policy (Oxford University Press, 2010), China and the Politics of Diplomacy in Asia (edited with Adrian Brown, Oxford University Press, 2011), Pakistan’s China Policy: An Exploration of Mutual Interest (edited with Adrian Brown, Oxford University Press, 2011), and Pakistan’s Foreign Policy: The Search for Regional Synergy (edited with Adrian Brown, Oxford University Press, 2013).
