Ashley Elenea Burkett, 33, and April Burford Watson, 34, were both released from prison Saturday after serving a year behind bars. They pleaded no contest last year to three counts each of unlawful sexual activity with male students and were sentenced to a year; they could have been sentenced up to 33 months behind bars.

Both women lost their jobs with the Santa Rosa School District as a result of their convictions.

I agree with all those saying it would have been different if it were male teachers.It is the same crime without reguard to gender but society puts a gender spin on it. males would have been given a much tougher sentence. This case will now be used to establish case law for other offenders and allow attorneys to argue for lesser sentencing as a result of it. A male convicted of the same crime (sex with a minor in the same age group) will be able to use this case to their advantage. I wish the judge would have considered that prior to imposing sentence.
